Success Begins in Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote those words, and they still ring true today; being enthusiastic about what’s in front of you makes it easier to set your mind to doing it — to doing it well and thoroughly. It seems that the human mind wants to be passionate about something.

If you are not passionate for the task in front of you, then you need link it to the greater goal it serves. Whether the task at hand is a step in that goal, or a means to an end, seeing it as a part of a whole helps you build enthusiasm.

If a thing does not move you, if you cannot even connect it to something you are passionate about, you may have trouble completing it or doing it in a way you can be proud of. It may even become a source of stress if you have to return to it.

We want our actions to lead to our passions, and connecting responsibilities to your hopes or goals is important in stirring up the passion to do it well and completely.

Emerson goes on to say (and I very much agree) that:

When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

So, what are you passionate about? What do you have on your to-do list today? How easily can you connect those things?

I am passionate about liberal religion, and about Unitarian Universalism as the most accessible form of liberal religion for the dominant culture around me. I want to commit myself to making Unitarian Universalism easier to share and understand—that is the primary goal of the I Am UU project. If you appreciate what we are doing towards that goal, please consider contributing to our long-term stability and improved quality by joining our Patrons on Ko-fi. For as little as $1 a month, you can help sustain innovative ministry and get more involved in the community that has grown up around this work.
