You’ve Got to Do.

Roughly 100 years ago, in his book “Which way? A study of Universalists and Universalism”, Rev. Lewis B. Fisher tried to answer the question “What do Universalists stand for?” in a clever way.

The only true answer to give to this question is that we do not stand at all, we move…

We are not stationary nor are we defending any final position.

We come from a tradition of those who see faith as an active thing, to be played with and reshaped. They see love as a duty and not as a thing to hold on to. Our spiritual forebearers treated religion as an activity.

Unitarian Universalism, done well, is not a label to pin on or a thing we visit on Sunday mornings. It is a set of aspirations we strive to realize and a vision we work to manifest. Our Principles, if they are principles, demand that we take action in the world, to the best of our ability, to Affirm and Promote our ideals.

One reason we must covenant with one another to be UUs is that what we are doing is hard, it is taxing, and it will wear us down if we are not working together and holding one another accountable or if are not being encouraging and holding each other with compassion. Despite the fact that we have covenanted to build a better world and Beloved Community, none of us could hope to do that alone.

Unitarian Universalists have a vision of salvation, but it is not one we can merely pray for; if we want a just, equitable, and compassionate world, we have to make that happen. Ours is not a religion of maybe and “we’ll see”.

We do not know precisely what the Beloved Community will look like, yet. But we know that we can only bring it into being if we keep moving.

If you would like to be part of spreading the life-affirming message of Unitarian Universalism, we need your support to keep our ministry going! Whether you can give just a couple of dollars now or a couple a month, you can help us reach more people with messages of encouragement and acceptance.
